Evangeline hustled Baxter to the front of the line alongside Keller, who was leading the noon ride. Baxter loved to be in front, and he needed little urging to pick up the pace and pass the other horses on the wide spot on the trail where Evangeline chose to move ahead.

“So, did you know this was a group of Class A assholes when you invited me on this ride?” She spoke low in Spanish, knowing Keller was also bilingual.

“Si. Lo siento.” He flashed her a cheesy smile.

“You’re not sorry, you ass.”

He continued the conversation in Spanish. “I know they’re fuck wads. They come every year on a corporate teambuilding weekend. The ones who aren’t jerks don’t come on the ride.”

“Hey,” came a booming voice, “speaka da English, or I’ll have to call Immigration.” Evangeline turned and recognized the voice of the biggest ass of all of them…the one who’d been riding right in front of her.

Her blood boiled. “You may have to listen to their shit, but I don’t.” She reined Baxter to trot back to the man.

She eyed the stick he’d snapped from an overhanging branch. “Maybe if you’d learned to speak another language, you’d know what we were talking about. Then again, maybe you wouldn’t want to know.”

“I don’t have to. I’m an American.” He looked down to his mount. “Goddam horse is as lazy as you people.”

“The horse responds to the ability of the rider.”

“I could get you fired.” He glared at her.

She scoffed as Baxter danced, sensing her growing anger. “I don’t fuckin’ work here. You can’t do shit to me.” She leaned closer. “I’ll tell you what though. If Sparky is not a suitable horse for you, maybe your skills are better suited to Baxter here.”

“Evangeline…” Keller’s voice held a warning. She held up her hand to silence him.

“I saw you marked on the list that you’re an expert horseman. It was probably an honest mistake they gave you Sparky.” She dismounted. “Here, take Baxter.”

The man’s chest rose and fell in a nervous fashion. His stare went from Evangeline to his colleagues. “Sure, I’d prefer to ride a horse with a little life left in him.”

He dismounted and handed the reins to Evangeline as she did the same. Baxter was at least two hands taller than the gelding, and she had to bite her lip to keep from laughing as the man struggled to mount the powerful horse.

“Are we ready?” Keller called. “We have an open space ahead where we can speed up a little.”

The group began walking again, and Evangeline knew she felt a little too much self-satisfaction as she watched the asshole struggling with Baxter who was walking but walking sideways and tossing his head in the air. This won’t last long.

As they entered the clearing, Keller told the riders they were going to pick up the pace and urged his mount to a canter. The others followed suit, laughing at themselves as they adjusted to the pace. Baxter, however, was still side-stepping, and the man smacked him on the ass with the stick.
