Chapter 23

Emma had never been to Hong Kong before. When her father was alive, he’d taken her to Singapore a few times when he had business there, but Singapore had an orderly way about it. Things were all in their proper place and tidy. So far, glancing outside their taxi, Hong Kong was not orderly.

The streets were swelling with people. Through her open rear-seat window, Emma could smell incense and fish drifting in from the outdoor markets and restaurants they were passing. The entire city was vibrant and bustling with noisy activity. She could also smell exhaust fumes. The traffic in Hong Kong was quite heavy.

Emma loved it. To her, Hong Kong was more like the New York City of the East. To her, it felt more like home.

“How did you know?” Miyuki asked.

The question drew Emma’s attention away from the window. But Miyuki was addressing Nadia. All three of them shared the back seat of the taxi while Olivia sat in front.

“I felt it,” Nadia answered. “The way the father talked to his daughter. The way he made her show respect to us. I felt that if we told him what his son did, he would feel ashamed and he could help us flip the daughter.”

“I should have thought of that. It was a great idea,” Miyuki said.

Emma remembered listening in on their conversation inside the cramped panel truck. She thought Miyuki and Nadia had done a great job at that restaurant. Emma was convinced it was her theater tips that made the difference.
