Thunder seemed on edge. At first, Iâd been worried it was something Iâd said or done. Then Iâd noticed the way he kept glancing at my dad and grandfather. Iâd been leery of going out to eat, worried about people whispering when I entered the restaurant. When weâd walked into the diner, the low murmur of voices came to a halt. I noticed everyone staring and would have turned around and left if Thunder hadnât laced our fingers together.
âFigures a whore like her would end up with a bunch of filthy bikers,â someone said. Not low enough the men with me didnât hear them. I felt Thunder tense, and my grandfatherâs head turned in their direction.
Hammer and my dad both walked over to the woman whoâd made the comment. Thunder led me past them to an empty table at the back near the wall. My grandfather leaned into the womanâs space, and my dad glared down at her.
âThat girl youâre calling a whore was abused by her so-called parents. Those pillars of the community you have on a pedestal? Theyâre no better than anyone else,â Hammer said.
âHer mom wasnât anything memorable, but my daughter?â Sam nodded his head toward me. âSheâs fucking amazing.â
I heard a few gasps around the diner and people glanced my way. Yeah, my dad had just dropped a bomb on them. The pristine Helen Whitman had an affair with someone. Not just anyone. A blue-collar guy. Sheâd die of embarrassment right now if she knew what heâd just divulged. It wouldnât take long before it spread through town.
âThat little shit, Evan, used her. Sent out a video of an underage girl. And I know what happened during the rest of his little show.â Hammer stood and scanned the diner. âIf I find out any of you were in that video, Iâm coming for you. Already spent twelve years in prison. Iâve got no problem going back if it means my granddaughter has justice.â
Tears blurred my vision, and I stood. Thunder didnât stop me as I approached my grandfather and dad. I hugged them both, feeling more loved in that moment than I had in my entire life.
âGrandpa, you shouldnât have said that. But thank you.â
He hugged me tighter before letting me go. âLetâs get something to eat.â
We went over to the table Thunder claimed for us, and I sat beside my husband again. He kissed me, just a short, quick one. It still made me feel warm inside. I couldnât stop smiling as I looked at the men sitting with me.
âRemind me to thank Wire and Lavender,â Thunder said. âPretty sure Iâm not topping this present. Ever.â
I giggled, but had to agree. Finding out Todd Whitman wasnât my biological father was beyond amazing. And now I had a grandfather too? Despite everything that Iâd been through, I felt happier than Iâd ever been before.
I sobered a moment and stared at Hammer. âI called you Grandpa, but weâre out in public and youâre wearing your cut. Should I have called you Hammer?â
He shook his head.
