Later, when Petra emerged from a hot shower and stepped into the kitchen, Jade was performing a rendition of the theme from The Jeffersons. Apparently Jade was very enthused about movin' on up to the east side, and doing a good job of both lead and backing vocals.

"What's for dinner, Wheezy?"

"Hog jowls and possum innards," Jade answered.

Petra leaned over the deep skillet and inhaled the aromatic steam. "Mmmm. Smells good—"

Jade dried her hands on a purple towel and moved up behind her, burying her face in Petra's neck. "So do you…" Jade slipped her hand beneath the soft cotton top and rubbed Petra's stomach, "Can I pick my own dessert tonight?"

"Tonight, and every night."

They peered out the kitchen window into the stillness of the evening, stars dotting the ebon sky.

Jade began to sway with her, as the Mediterranean Lamb and Lentil Stew bubbled in the skillet. Jade sang softly, a portion of one of her own songs.
