Chapter Twelve
Return to Hopeshire
T he party departed the Grass Lands at dawn. Lady Aylen looked back from her place alongside the Kingâs Elder. Gwyness rode with a few senior knights and the long column of men. She smiled.
âYou are pleased, Lady Aylen.â
âKing Aereth, I came to Hopeshire with two thousand. Today, we ride with ten thousand. I cannot be anything but pleased.â
âAs I said to Mr. Traveler, the Fates are with us on this journey,â Eothelm said.
âSpeaking of Mr. Traveler, he seems to be very negative about our chances. Not once have I heard him say an uplifting word of the journey to come. Even his words that Atlantea is fond of humans seem to have a double meaning.â
âHis caution is understandable, Lady Aylen,â Aereth said. âDo we not prefer a guide and trailmaster who speaks the truth about the dangers to come over one who engages in a fiction of no danger at all? We all listened intently to his accounts at the night fire. Goblins, trolls, and centaurs. He is simply setting our minds where they must beâin a realistic state. He will supply the pessimism and fear; we will supply the optimism and luck. If the reverse were true, we would be in trouble. â
âThough, in his favor, I have no doubt he and his dog will defend this caravan to the death.â
âNor do I.â
âI spoke unwisely. We should take his advice and focus on Avalonia and reserve our speculation of the lands beyond until we actually arrive there.â
Traveler was in conversation with Pangolin at the rear of the caravan. As the sight of Hopeshire came into view, he rode back to the front of the columns.
âSires, what are your intentions in regard to Hopeshire?â he asked.
âWe see no reason to stop, Mr. Traveler,â Aereth said.
âThen I will ride ahead and see if anything remains in their markets that we might need. Particularly since we are a far larger party, I should acquire more herbs and such for my medicine bag. In fact, I will dedicate a wagon for my medicinal supplies.â
âExcellent idea, Mr. Traveler,â Eothelm said. âWe should acquire additional healers if any are to be found, to ease your burden. Guide and trailmaster is job enough for you.â
âDoubtful here though, sire.â
âMay I accompany you, Mr. Traveler?â Gwyness asked. âI can also search the markets.â
âOf course.â
âSir, do you need me to go as well?â Hobbs asked from the ground.
âNo, Mr. Hobbs. You can attend to the men. We should be done before our caravan reaches the town center.â
