Chapter Thirteen

Mermaids

Luke

Claudette is at my bedside again. Lately, it seems like there’s always someone there. Someone needing to unload their secrets; and what better confidant than the guy who can’t talk back?

I can tell it is Claudette because of the earthy scent that’s unique to her after working with herbs and powders for so long.

“So,” Claudette draws the word out slowly, “Seamus and I took the leap and eloped,” she sighs heavily, “eloped. I’ve always hated that word, it sounds so dirty; like we have something to be ashamed of. Anyway, we went down to the justice of the peace yesterday and did it.”

It doesn’t really surprise me that Mr. Weatherly and Claudette decided to get married. Who knows, if Claudette’s mother hadn’t gone after Mr. Weatherly and Lizette’s mother hadn’t come down to New Orleans to get him, Claudette and Mr. Weatherly might have married years ago. Their timing is a little off, though. My involuntary silence seems to unnerve Claudette.

“I know what you’re thinking;” Claudette says hurriedly, “The timing sucks. We should have waited for Lizette and Sam to return but we were afraid if we didn’t do it now we never would. I’m sure Lizette will understand, and Sam doesn’t like me very much anyway.”

She falls silent and the sound of her bangles jingling lets me know that she’s nervous. Claudette clears her throat a couple of times and I hear the sound of someone knocking on wood.

Even Claudette seems surprised at the sound, “oh look, Luke, Luna is here to see you.”

Internally I snort at Claudette’s suggestion to “look here” or anywhere for that matter. She and I both know I’m unable to move a muscle, let alone look to see who my latest visitor is. I’m powerless to stop my bedroom from turning into the Grand Central Station for nervous Eternals.

Pointed heels, like the leather boots Luna is so fond of, click across the hardwood floor and approach the bed.

“Hello Luke,” her sultry, raspy voice rings clear near my left ear. Her voice moves further away as if Luna is turning toward someone else in the room as she says, “I can take it from here, Claudette.”

A wooden chair scrapes across the floor while a door opens and closes with a creak and a snick in the background.

“For a newlywed, you would think she’d be a lot more cheerful,” Luna comments, her voice brightening with humor, “but what would I know? I’ve never been married.” Luna goes silent as she contemplates her comment bitterly. I peek into her thoughts but quickly slink back as I see the swirl of memories of past relationships flowing through her head.

Changing the subject Luna says, “Henry is getting the process started for what I talked to you about last time I was here. It’s just the initial paperwork right now, should you not want to continue the process when you come out of this then I will make it all go away. You won’t hurt my feelings. The papers aren’t valid without your signature anyway, Luke.
