It’s nearing 7 p.m. when I call Felicity about a radio show she lined up for me to be a guest on later in the week. Me, being the terrible planner that I am, already had a meeting and photoshoot scheduled with one of my sponsors that I can’t miss. Now more than ever it’s important that I keep a good rapport with the companies representing me.

I need to hire another assistant to manage my schedule so things like this don’t get overlooked. Someone who’s way more efficient than I am with scheduling and keeping tabs on important things.

After dialing Felicity's number, she picks up, sounding a little out of breath. “Hello?”

“Hey. Liss?” Her nickname springs to my lips automatically. Thankfully, she doesn’t correct me.

“Hey, Alden. How’s it going? Still feeling good about the press conference?”

“I guess. Should I feel good about it?”

“Absolutely, you should. You did well today.” Her clipped, professional tone grates on me. I want the sassy, flirty Liss back. “And the press got what they wanted. Let them take what we’ve given them and run with it.”

“Okay,” I say, running a hand through my hair. It sounds like papers shuffle in the background, then muffled words as if Liss covers the phone with her hand and begins talking to someone else. “Are you still at work?”

“Uh.” She clears her throat. “Yeah. I had to stay late tonight and work on some things. Ginger is here helping me.”

“Have you eaten?” An idea forms as the need to take care of her rises.

“No, but it’s okay. I do this all the time.”

Cash yells at his video game, forcing me to hop up from the couch and step into the bathroom. “Late night dinners are a common occurrence for you, then?”

“Ah, well. I mean, yeah. Sometimes. When I’ve got work to do.”

“What about Ginger? Has she eaten?”

Liss is silent for a few seconds. “Yes, she already went and grabbed something. Besides, she’ll be leaving in a few minutes anyway. Was there something you needed, Alden?”

She’s dismissing me, but little does she know, that’s not easy to do. I put Liss on speaker phone and immediately start pulling up restaurants that offer carryout. With as sore as we are from training, Cash and I had nothing else planned other than TV and video games anyway.

“Well, I hate to have to tell you this,” I say, keeping her on the line, “but I need to reschedule the radio show this week.” After doing a quick scroll through the available options, I decide on a Thai restaurant that boasts a delicious looking vegan menu.

“Oh, no. Really?” She sounds disappointed.

“Yes, unfortunately. I thought I was free, but it turns out I have a sponsor photoshoot that day. Completely forgot about it until they called me to confirm this afternoon.”

“Oh, okay.” More papers rummaging around, then the clicking of a keyboard. “I’ll reschedule it, then. Is there anything you need from me at your sponsor photoshoot?”

“Nah. Not unless you want to come and just hang out?” I quickly select two vegan pad Thai meals and some coconut pudding for dessert.
