Chapter Thirteen

“I’ve got this, Arkie,” Max repeated for at least the third time as he buttoned his ski jacket over his thermal sweater. “You look like shit. Go back to bed before Jen catches you.”

“I just want to make sure you know what you’re up against,” Noah croaked. His voice was almost gone, and he felt like hell, but he wasn’t going to let Max leave until they’d hammered out every detail.

“I’ve got my radio. If I run into any trouble, I’ll let you know.” Max found his gloves and walked over to the kitchen door. He was trussed up like an astronaut going off to space. “I’ll stick to the track and come straight back, I promise.”

“You’d better.” Noah wheezed as he almost coughed up a lung.

Max stepped back from him. “Dude, I hope Jen ordered up some medication for you.”

“I did.” Jen appeared behind them carrying Sky.

Noah noticed she was keeping her distance, which made sense. She was pissed with him right now, and he didn’t think it was just because he’d got out of bed without waiting for her okay, He tried not to remember the feel of her landing on top of him and the sensation that she belonged there. He’d wanted to wrap his arms around her and keep her there forever. Thank God she had more sense than he did and had remained sane enough to gracefully push him away and get out. Hopefully, she’d blame his meds and not think he’d gone soft on her.

From the way she was avoiding eye contact with him, he wasn’t her favorite person in the world right now.

“If you insist on staying up, Noah, why don’t you set up on the couch in the family room? I’ll put Sky in his playpen as far away from you as possible while I tend to Luke. Please don’t attempt to pick him up.”

“I won’t.” Noah tried to speak more clearly, but his throat felt like it was full of rocks.

The look she gave him before she turned her attention to Max was enough to make him retreat to the family room, where she’d made him a comfortable spot on the couch, complete with extra pillows and blankets. He sank gratefully into his new space and immediately noticed the steaming mug of lemon beside him, a new box of tissues, and a small working humidifier.

Man, he hadn’t been looked after like this since . . . he frowned. Scratch that. He’d never been looked after like this. His mother had worked three jobs and he’d been the one doing the coddling for his little sisters. It was kind of nice.

Jen came in and set Sky in the playpen. The little guy had very red cheeks and was grizzling, which wasn’t like him.

“Teething?” Noah asked as Jen gave Sky his plastic bone. He immediately jammed it into his mouth and started drooling.

“Yup.” Jen smoothed Sky’s curls. “Poor little guy.”

“I’ll keep an eye on him,” Noah said.

“I appreciate that.” She cast an eye over Noah’s setup.
