That night, in the dining hall, Gralla asked us to stay after the soldiers had finished their meal. Once they were gone, he said in a somber voice, âMy lord has just informed me. We have another mission. This time, all of you are required to go.â
Unease gripped me, but I fought it off. Getting scared wouldnât help. âWhere are we going?â Litro asked.
He sounded nervous, and I didnât blame him. Training was one thing, but in a combat situation, he was in over his head, and he knew it. Sekisa could handle himself, and as for Angyalla and me, weâd watch out for each other.
âIt is a world called Jidda,â Gralla replied between sips of water. âOur empire has been at war with that planet for the past year. We have the superior technology, but they have greater numbers. Our problem is that we cannot replace capable fighters that quickly. We have called in our forces from our homeworld, but they may not be enough. This war could go on forever.â
So, if they were at a stalemate, then what was the purpose of all this? Gralla seemed to read my mind. âIf you are asking why we continue to fight, it is because our empire must continuously expand. We have need of more resources and more riches on our world. Our population is too great, and we must have additional territory in which to place our people. That is our way, agree with it or not.â
A world at constant war. It would have consumed resources like a fire burning through paper. Earth had already experienced two world wars, but they were firecrackers compared to what Grallaâs people were going through. He should have known that empires couldnât expand forever, but it wasnât my place to tell him that.
âWhen are we leaving?â Sekisa asked.
For the first time since Iâd known him, Gralla looked doubtful. No, not doubtfulâafraid. This was a man who didnât know the meaning of the word fear, but I could see it in his eyes. This would not be an easy task.
âTomorrow morning, we will go and commit ourselves to an all-out attack.â
My stomach lurched. Tomorrow. Not that I cared if the Dranians won or lost. I was only concerned that Angyalla and I, along with our friends, would make it back alive. âUh, are you going one-on-one with another warrior?â I asked.
Gralla shook his head. âNo, the leader of Jidda will not accept such a challenge. The stakes are too high for both our worlds. Jidda does not have an empire the size of ours, yet it, too, has designs on expansion. Currently, they possess three other worlds. We possess seven. As with any empire, more is usually better, although control is a most vexing matter.â
The more he spoke, the quieter and more reflective he became. âFenton of Earth, is your world one of war?â
âNo, itâs not. We have wars, but not like your planet does.â
âDrana is the world I was born into,â he said and took a noisy gulp of water.
