FOWL PLAY

Maybe it’s my inner ornithologist, but I always seem to add birds to my interiors—it’s no wonder my design how-to show is called Dress My Nest. These inexpensive plastic critters, above, are some of the funnest I’ve found. Walk past or make a sudden move, and their motion sensors trigger species-specific birdsong—think of it as cheep chic.

AMERICAN PLANKSTER

Even the most buttoned-up of spaces can have some visual twists. This pavilion I created at the Japanese World’s Fair was for diplomats and dignitaries to meet and mingle. Not only was it supposed to be elegant, sophisticated, and inviting, but it also had to showcase the best in American craftsmanship and design. I started with classic elements with a modern twist, including: a wool carpet with an octagonal trellis pattern; my custom-made, square-armed Saratoga sofa; coffee tables topped with Vermont stone; and velvet-upholstered slipper chairs. Then I added a striking room divider created by Bryan Nash Gill and constructed of ten-foot-long slabs of felled sycamore. But rather than doing precise planks, we kept the wood as-is, with all of the rawness and unevenness intact. Floor lamps with metal-mesh shades that riff on classic candelabra and a trio of conversation-starter sculptures constructed from circular machine parts also liven up the space. The finished look redefines Americana in a contemporary way.
