I was worried about how I could arrange with Mara to get one day “off.” I had to see Tonio without her. When I got back home, as we called our place in the bushes behind the beach, Mara was understandably upset. I hated to lie to her, but I couldn’t see any way around it.
“Where have you been? Do you realize how late it is? You scared the shit out of me. I thought something had happened to you,” Mara said, unable to hide how angry she was.
“I’m sorry. You know how those buses are . . . I waited and waited, and then I went to another bus stop, but that was a mistake. So I went back to the first one . . .”
“And where is the stuff you were supposed to buy? I had to buy the expensive water in the bar!” she exclaimed when she noticed that I wasn’t carrying anything. I had utterly forgotten about the shopping I was supposed to do.
“I was so tired of waiting, and when the bus finally arrived, I forgot the bag at the bus stop. Don’t worry! I’ll buy water for us today in the bar, and tomorrow I’ll go back into town again. You can just lie on the beach and enjoy swimming.”
“You are not leaving me again. We’re on this trip together! Together, remember? What if something happens? I’ll go with you, and that’s that!” Mara said resolutely.
“There’s no need, really. I can go by myself. I know now how the buses—”
“No way,” she insisted. “Where you go, I go!”
I was trapped by the responsibility I felt toward her; we were, as she pointed out, traveling together. I couldn’t just go to town alone. I felt a pang of sorrow for Tonio’s disappointment, and for my own, as another chance was about to pass me by. All kinds of questions were running through my head, mostly about what Tonio would think of me. I wanted to go, in spite of the fact that I would lose Mara. But as much as I wanted to see Tonio, I just couldn’t do that to her. I felt frozen.
