4.

“THE WIG LOOKS stupid,” Callie says, dumping the contents of the bag onto the sink. “And the clothes? Moronic.”

They’re in the ladies’ room at Cherry Park, a mere sixty yards from the drop point where Sadie met the bag lady minutes ago. Callie picks up the wig and works her fingers through the skull cap.

“What are you doing?”

“Searching for the transmitter.”

“Surely you don’t think the killer would—”

“Ah! Found it. Tell me I’m good!”

Sadie shrugs. “This is insane. Total overkill. I’m a housewife.”

Callie removes a pocket knife from her handbag and digs the transmitter out of the netting. “Here,” she says. “Put it in your purse. When you get to your room, leave your purse there and come find me.”

“Where will you be?”

“In the connecting room next to yours, if it’s available.”

“And if it isn’t?”

“I’ll make the occupants an offer they can’t refuse.” She notes Sadie’s expression and says, “What’s wrong?”

“I sort of figured you’d be staying with me through the night. You know, in case he comes for me.”

“He promised he wouldn’t.”

“And you believe him?”

“Not really.”

“I have a feeling he’s coming tonight.”

“We can only hope, but I doubt we’ll get that lucky.”

“Can you stay in my room, just in case?”

“No. We can’t let him know I’m helping you.”

“How would he find out?”

“He’s had access to your hotel room.”

“So?”

“It only takes minutes to install miniature video cameras.”

Sadie’s face suddenly contorts. “What? That’s so gross! It’s…Omigod, it’s disgusting!” She thinks a minute, then says, “Even in the bathroom?”

“Of course. Why not?”

“Oh…my…God!”

“I could locate and remove them, but not without being seen. Not to mention that doing so would really get his attention.”

Sadie shakes her head. “This is unacceptable. I can’t function under these circumstances. I’ll have to insist on spending the night with you, in your room.”

Callie laughs. “You’re offering me a sleepover?” Her eyes make a thorough sweep of Sadie’s body, and settle on her backside. “I accept. I could really get into that!”

Sadie turns her body enough to hide the view. “You don’t mean…uh…literally, do you?”

Callie tosses her head. “I won’t rule it out.” She goes outside to stand guard while Sadie changes. When Sadie exits the bathroom wearing the clothes, wig, and sunglasses, Callie bursts out laughing.

Sadie frowns. “It can’t be that funny.”

“Oh, but it is! You look like…oh, God, I can’t even come up with what you look like! A whorehouse drag queen? No, wait! I’ve got it: you look like Natasha, from Rocky and Bullwinkle!”

“Oh, great.”

“Hey, Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!”

“Hilarious.”

“Nuthin’ up my sleeve!”

“Got any more?”

“Oops! Wrong hat! Say it.”

“What?”

“What Natasha says: ‘Hello, dollink!’”

Sadie shakes her head. “Who’d have guessed this is what it’s like to spend an afternoon in the park with a hit woman?”

“No doubt about it,” Callie says. “I’ve gotta get a new hat!”
