Intellectual and Religious Searching (Xuéshù sīxiǎng yǔ zōngjiào zhuīqiú )

In the early Qing, the Manchu declared neo-Confucianism the state orthodoxy. In order to control intellectuals and the spread of knowledge, the Qing state sponsored enormous literary projects, such as the Gǔjīn túshū jíchéng (Synthesis of Books and Illustrations Past and Present, 1726–1728). Many scholars devoted themselves to the laborious literary work known as the kǎozhèngxué (“evidential research movement”), which contributed hugely to critical studies of Chinese history, philosophy, and philology. Literary works such as Liáozhāi zhìyì (Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio) by Pú Sōnglíng (1640–1715), Rúlín wàishǐ (The Scholars) by Wú Jìngzǐ (1701–1754), and Hónglóu mèng (Dream of the Red Chamber) by Cáo Xuěqín (1715–1763), vividly exposed the social problems of their times.

European missionaries continued to work at the imperial court and in the provinces. During the nineteenth century, Protestant missionaries brought Western values, science, technology, medicine, and education to China. By the end of the century, there were about 750 Catholic and 1,300 Protestant missionaries in China, who converted about 200,000 Chinese.
