Chapter 16
Bo slammed the door to his car and walked up to the store on the block. The scene out there had changed since Junior had come down supplying the town with weight. Instead of renting cars, the boys were buying luxury models vehicles, buying clothes from the most expensive stores in the mall and paying for extended stays in five star hotels. Although jobs were scarce in the small town, the revenue from drugs kept the businesses open and thriving, in turn keeping people employed. In one aspect drugs was a necessary evil in the wake of the bad economy because it kept the businesses in town profitable but the flip side was that it destroyed the small African American community families that became addicted to the highly addictive crack cocaine. It was not a recreational drug like powder cocaine and when it hit the scene users soon realized one hit could have you hooked and chasing it most of your life. Although it was a very profitable business, it left broken homes in its wake.
Bo walked into the store and slapped some of the boys five as he made his way to the back. Two boys shooting pool stopped when they saw him approaching and they all walked towards the bathroom in the back of the store.
"I need another ounce. You got one on you?" The first guy asked Bo as he pulled out a stack of money from his pocket and started counting. While he counted his partner pulled out a stack of his own and began counting bills. He wanted more work too. Bo took the money from both boys and counted it all out himself and when he was done dug into pocket and pulled out a small digital scale and placed it on the bathroom sink. He pulled out a small Ziploc bag tied tightly with a rough round crystallized rock inside. He placed it on the scale and it read 28.5 and he passed it to the first guy then did the same thing again for the other guy. They both slapped him five after their drug transaction and went back to shooting pool.
"When you gon' let me get sumthin'?" A young guy sitting on the bench asked Bo as he passed him.
Bo looked down at the boy who was asking him the question. "Why you ain't in school boy?" He asked ignoring his question.
"Ain't no money in school." He replied defiantly.
Bo laughed. "You right 'bout that, all the money in here." Bo flashed his knot of money.
"So when you gon' let me make some?" The young boy pushed.
Bo scratched his head and looked around the store. Everyone in there was selling drugs and all the drugs came from one source, Muffin. All the work was being distributed by him so there was no reason the young boy couldn't get some. "Ok, I'm gon' give you something small when I get back."
The young boy's eyes lit up as a smile grew on his hairless face.
