Renfield Frank was the name of the shipâs wizard, and he was fucking terrible at his job. I knew a little about his family, but nothing about him. The Frank family was a large family with great lands in southwest Penn. Being close to the border with not only the Queendom of Georgia, but the natives west of the Mississippi, it was a family that distinguished itself with military service. I vaguely remembered a member of the Frank family in my class at university going into the Royal Navy after graduation.
Renfield was not that Frank. The man had ten years and a hundred in fifty pounds on me; and not in the good way. He was fat, sloppy, lazy, and I hoped that Siobhan got a killer deal on his contract, because he wasnât worth the parchment it was written on.
When most people talked about the Frank family, they spoke about them with respect. Renfield was a thirdborn black sheep who never looked to amount to anything in his life, and looked for his family name to get him from day to day. I empathized with him on some points. I knew what it was like to be a thirdborn in a respected family, but I absolutely didnât understand him in other ways. I never wanted to be a fat fuck who didnât do anything with his life. I was always trying to do something. That part of Renfield made me sick, and as I kicked open the door to the simulacrum, I wanted to shove my foot up his ass.
We had a French warship tailing us, and the other wizard had his feet kicked up on a barrel and was snoring loudly. Even the door smacking into the bulkhead didnât rouse him. I stomped over to him and kicked the barrel out from underneath his feet.
âGet up!â I snapped as I stepped into the simulacrum.
I channeled power into the circle around me, and felt me and the ship become one. The sails were my head, the rigging my hair, and the deck my flesh. I could feel the crewmembers hurrying across me like worker ants doing their queenâs bidding. The queen herself was at the wheel of Mystic, shouting orders, and trying to coax every bit of wind into her sails.
âMy turn,â I looked to the magic inside me, and funneled it into the spinning crystal core that extended along the keel of the ship.
It had been spinning steadily, a mess of white and gold; but as I pumped it full of magic, it started to blur faster, and grow brighter.
âAllen, what the hell?â Renfield grabbed me.
I shrugged him off, and he stumbled back into some crates. His belly jiggled as he nearly fell on his ass with his face covered in shock.
âWeâre being chased by a French warship,â I practically snarled at him. âWe need speed, and youâre literally asleep at the wheel. Iâm getting us started, and then you put everything youâve got into her. If youâre
