Steve showed up at my house the next day, at the same time. It wasn’t something either of us discussed or acknowledged; he was there at a quarter to one, I got in the car, and we went to work together. We used the short time together to talk about the upcoming game, and my concerns, and what Steve thought about it. We also started talking about more personal stuff. What it was like growing up in California versus Utah. How impractical it was for Steve to drive a sports car in Utah during the winter. The struggles I dealt with when I first made the jump to head coach at Marysvale, and how long it took to earn the respect of the players.

It was all weirdly… normal, I guess? I felt comfortable around him, and he was beginning to open up to me. Which was especially surprising considering the kiss we had shared. Wasn’t this supposed to be awkward? Since it wasn’t, did that mean anything?

We had a home game on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers. We absolutely crushed them, 52 - 7. The game was never in doubt, both offensively and defensively.

There were photos of me in the Salt Lake City Tribune the next day, standing on the sideline with one crutch under my arm and a clipboard held up in front of my face. When Marty showed me the photos on Monday, I groaned loudly.

“I only used the crutches to get out onto the field,” I complained. “I ditched them and stood up the whole time without any help. But of course they use the photos where I look weak.”

“Injuries are dramatic,” Marty replied. Nobody wants to see a photo of the coach just standing there, doing their job.”

Steve continued picking me up every morning, and taking me home in the afternoons. I started thinking of him as a reliable part of my life, and not just a temporary fix while I waited for surgery. My stomach fluttered as I stood by my window, waiting for him to arrive, fearing that he might suddenly text me and say that something came up and I would need to get my own ride. But he was always there, always on time, as if taking me to work was his job rather than an inconvenience. I was so grateful for his simple, guilt-free attitude about it.

It doesn’t mean anything, I told myself. I would think the same thing if he was a female coworker helping me.

On Saturday we traveled to Kansas City to play the Chiefs. Dallas Lockett and the offense got us out to an early 10 - 0 lead, which took the pressure off the defense and allowed them to execute our gameplan with ease. The Chiefs caught us off guard once or twice, and scored two touchdowns, but we still won the game, 24 - 14.

I had surgery the following Tuesday. Marty insisted on giving me a ride, and made sure I put him down as the person to pick me up afterward.
