Saviors and CEOs

Research by Harvard Business School’s Rakesh Khurana noted that the impact that CEOs actually have on companies is less than is commonly believed. Khurana estimated that anywhere from 30 to 40 percent of a company’s performance is attributable to industry effects, 10 to 20 percent to cyclical economic changes, and perhaps just 10 percent to the CEO.3 Khurana went on to challenge the business world’s obsession with star CEOs in Searching for a Corporate Savior: The Irrational Quest for Charismatic CEOs.4
