CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Death Surges and Duds

“I should sue you for sleep deprivation,” Courtney was complaining. We were sitting in a circle, in the middle of Cooper’s living room. It was close to midnight and we were all tired. “Tomorrow’s a school day. I need my beauty sleep.”

“In that case,” Levi said, “you should probably sleep through summer.”

Bite me, Levi.

Edward will bite you, Levi thought back.

I totally would, thought Edward.

“Why are we here again?” Jordana asked, yawning.

“Because this is an emergency,” Pi said. “We might be in danger.” I have no idea why she’s here. It’s not like her ESP is coming back.

“I can hear long distance,” Isaac said. “What’s dangerous about that? You wanted to stimulate the NFG. It’s stimulated. Seems the experiment is working.”

Pi shook her head. “Just because you have extra powers doesn’t mean you won’t eventually lose your ESP. This could be temporary. It could be a death surge.”

“What’s a death surge?” Mona asked.

Olivia turned pale. “It’s when terminally ill patients get a surge of energy just before they die.”

“Oh. My. God,” Courtney said. “Are we going to die?”

Pi rolled her eyes. “No one’s dying, okay? I was talking about our ESP.”

There was a lot of mental musing, and then everyone got quiet.

“Okay, listen up,” Pi said. “After listening to each of your stories, I have concluded that four of the six groups have been enhanced.”

Duh, Dave thought.

“Let’s start with Group 1,” Pi said, ignoring him. “All those who can hear through walls, please raise your hands.”

Mackenzie, Edward, and Brinn shot up their arms.

“Brinn heard me through the bathroom wall,” Mackenzie said. “Are you saying it’s because of the magnesium?”

“You were ESPeeing,” Cooper joked, and we all groaned.

“I think—” Brinn started.

“Exactly,” Pi said to Mackenzie, cutting Brinn off. She turned to the others. “I want everyone to take note. The entire group has been enhanced. Therefore, it was the magnesium that caused it. Magnesium makes Espies hear through walls.”

“But remember when we first got ESP?” Jordana asked. “I could hear through walls a little, too. I wasn’t taking magnesium.”

“Maybe you were just eating something with a lot of magnesium in it,” Pi said.

“Like what?”

“Pumpkin seeds? Almonds?”

“Oh! I was drinking almond milk for a while. A lot of it. Could that have done it?”

“Yes,” Pi said. “Why’d you stop?”

“I didn’t like the taste,” she said. But she thought, It gave me cold sores.

Ew. Does Jordana have herpes?

Cold sores aren’t herpes!

Yes, they are, Olivia thought. The HSV-1 strain.

I don’t want any kind of strain.

“Wait,” said Mackenzie. “I’ve been taking magnesium all my life. Are you saying it was the magnesium that made me hear through walls to begin with?” I’m not special?

Yes, Pi thought. That’s exactly what I’m saying. If I’d been the one taking magnesium, then I’d have been number one in Lab all along.

“So that’s why my ESP got stronger?” Mackenzie asked. “Because I’m taking more?”

“Yes. Didn’t you say you heard your boyfriend though the convenience store wall? You were about fifty feet away, right?”

Your boyfriend? Cooper thought. Now he’s your boyfriend?

Olivia gave Cooper a look.
