Simply by being aware of these misleading “rules of thumb”, we can more easily avoid being tricked by them.

Whenever you’re avoiding taking a risk, check through the items on the left-hand side of the chart above. If the reasons for your feelings of threat involve one or more of those items, then think through whether your decision is rational and makes sense.

Alternatively, if you’re going to be engaging in a risky activity, check your decision against the points listed on the right-hand side of the chart, to make sure that you haven’t unreasonably downplayed the level of risk involved.
