I woke up the next day feeling much better. I had texted Trane briefly the night before, but I’d fallen asleep before he’d answered. He hadn’t sent me a response until three in the morning. Which was odd since he’d been texting me back within a few minutes all week. Besides last night’s debacle, I had known something was off with him, but my brain had been so fuzzy yesterday that I hadn’t been able to process it.
When I thought back now, it seemed like it had started the night before. He’d been distant since he’d gotten that text, and even though he’d brought me home yesterday, something was making him pull back. I could feel it.
I drank a bunch of water before breakfast, ate toast and fruit, and stayed away from caffeine to try to keep another migraine from starting. Staying hydrated helped as well. I didn’t want to have a repeat of yesterday.
My dad came into the kitchen right as I was heading out.
“Good morning, sweetheart. Feeling better?” he asked as he served himself a huge cup of coffee.
“Much.”
“Are you okay to work today?” He frowned when he saw that I was already in my lifeguarding uniform.
“I think so. My brain still feels a little mushy, but I’ll talk to Mr. Eldred this morning in case it happens again.”
“That’s a good plan. If you need me to come get you, I can,” he said. “Did you eat something?”
My eating and not eating was always such a concern for everyone. My mom was always watching so I didn’t eat too much, and my dad always worried that I didn’t eat enough. In junior high, I’d had a couple of months right after I’d started modeling where I’d eaten almost nothing because my agent had mentioned that I could “lose a few pounds.” That was another huge issue in the ongoing battle of my parents’ marriage.
My dad had panicked. I’d had a whole round of doctor appointments, therapy, and visits to the nutritionist.
So, now, I tried to do what my therapist had said and listen to my body. I ate when I was hungry—most times. I tried to keep a balance of healthy eating and eating what I wanted once in a while. The fact that I was taking a modeling break this summer was helping, but when there was a lot of stress in my life, I tended to revert back to not eating. Bringing only a protein bar for lunch had to stop. I obviously needed more than that with this job.
“Yes, toast and fruit. I packed a salad with chicken for lunch,” I assured him.
He always looked relieved when he knew I had eaten. When Mitchell was there, he made sure he and Brandy tracked what I ate as much as possible. It was creepy and annoying all at the same time. I wished everyone would worry about themselves more.
“Good, good. So, what’s the deal with Trane? He your boyfriend?”
“Dad—”
He held his hands up as if to ward me off.
