A Really Bad Boy
BENJAMIN
When the Ethiopian government troops drove everybody into the Gilo, whether or not you could swim you had to dive into that water. Even if you could swim, a lot of people stepped on you. Many people died. My leg wound was so bad, but the Lord God helped me.
After that we wandered through the swamps, sleeping in trees, and every night mosquitoes sucked out the little blood I had. Each morning I woke up weaker than the night before.
We survived on whatever we could get. We wandered around to local villages. If the Anuoak people saw us, sometimes they were friendly. Theyâd call us over and give us some food. But when boys stole from them they shot at them.
I tried to care for my leg but it was infected from the water weâd walked through. I went to the hospital in Pochala town and the doctor gave me a medicine but it did not cure me. The good medicines I needed were in the hospital.
One day I went back to the hospital and said, âI need a treatment for my wound.â
They said, âNo, you have already been treated.â
I said, âAll right. I donât need your treatment either.â And I grabbed the antibiotics I wanted and ran away.
They shouted, âLook at this boy. Heâs a really, really bad boy. He doesnât listen to what the doctor says.â
They tried to call me back to take away the medicine from me. But one of the doctors said, âLet him go. He is a young kid. He doesnât know what he is doing. He doesnât know how bad the medicines are. Heâll find out when the medicine infects his wound.â
But I knew what I was doing because I remembered the medicine from before. That is why I stole the medicine. I didnât want them to cut off my leg. I took care of my wound.
