Maddie’s memorial was four days later. Her parents had made all the arrangements because They was a ghost. No one had seen him or talked to him since the hospital.

(“We were all hurting,” Kai told me. “Maddie was a shooting star, a burning light against a world of darkness, and it was way too soon for her to have to leave.” Kai was in tears, having pulled up the blue skull necklace she still wore under her shirt. “Life is so precious, Gabe. Death comes out of nowhere and we can’t stop it. We can never forget that. I threw so much of our time together away because of stupid reasons like pride and popularity. It still feels like we only had a blink of an eye together, and she was gone. It’s been forty years almost, and I still think of her every day. I still miss her.”)

The visitation was the night before, and They hadn’t shown up. (“I was worried he might have left town. Or worse,” Kai told me.) The day of, however, he did arrive to pay his last respects. Right before the end, the minister (the one who’d married them) asked They if there was anything he wanted to say, as he hadn’t so much as cried or spoke. They nodded and took a step forward:
