Chapter 21: Camille
Camilleâs guests each checked on Noah to make sure he was okay. They surrounded him with comfort, love, and reassurances that everything would be fine. Noah seemed shaken, but he didnât remember what had happened. Probably for the best, Camille thought.
Ava sat on the rug in the middle of the room, cradling Noahâs head on her lap. He was still lying on the floor, trying to get his bearings. He seemed confused about the situation, while Ava muttered to him over and over that he would be okay. Leah and Vincent stood protectively near them and kept darting looks at Camille as if she were a rabid dog bracing for an attack. What did they think was going to happen?
They couldnât have figured out her secret yet, but clearly, they knew something was off. Without learning more, they couldnât piece together the truth, though. They didnât know enough. Camille debated if she should let them sweat a little longer, or if she should give them a hint about what had really happened. Which plan would have more of an effect? And which choice would be more fun for her? Decisions, decisionsâ¦
Ava looked up at her from her position on the floor, bent over Noah. Tears had finally stopped falling from her eyes, and she appeared to be pulling herself together at last. Her eyes were red and bloodshot from crying; streaks of mascara marred her tanned cheeks. Seeing Noah almost die must have shaken her up. It was a fresh change to see the selfish girl show some emotion. Good. Now maybe they would all listen to her.
âHow did you save him?â Ava asked in a soft voice, as if she was timidâthe complete opposite of how she normally acted. She sniffled and wiped her nose with the back of her hand.
Camille shook her head firmly. âI already said I canât tell you that. Please donât ask me again, or youâll regret it.â
Avaâs eyes widened, and she nodded, diverting her gaze from Camille and back to Noah.
âWhy?â Leah asked, turning to Camille with a fierce look in her eyes.
âWhy what?â Camille tilted her head to the side.
âWhy did you save him?â Leah asked.
Camille chuckled and stroked Brodyâs soft fur lovingly. âWhy wouldnât I? I wasnât about to let someone die in my home. What would I have done with the body?â
Leah and Ava both gasped. It probably wasnât the answer they wanted to hear, but it was the truth.
âHe doesnât have any allergies, and heâs never had any major health issues. He rarely gets sick. I donât think heâs even had a cold since I met him. So, Iâm still confused about what happened. I need to know so it doesnât happen again. Weâre too far away from a hospital to get help if something else happens,â Ava said, begging for answers.
âThatâs true. I think the nearest hospital is fifty miles away. You could never make it there in time if something else were to happen,â Camille said, continuing to stroke Brody, who sighed happily at the extra attention.
