CHAPTER 18: DOWNTOWN POINT BLANK

The Electra was about a block ahead of Theresa and Reggie now, speeding and swerving through traffic on Colorado Ave. There had been no further gunshots. Whoever had fired from the passenger side wasn’t risking identification by sticking their arm and upper torso out the window for a second drive-by!

“He’s turning right on Cloverfield!” Theresa exclaimed to Reggie. “Hurry, he’s gonna try to get on the freeway!”

“I see him!” Reggie called back, whipping the Malibu around a couple of cars paused at 20th and running a stop sign. There were several horn honks and angry shouts from the other vehicles.

The Electra fish-tailed around the corner at the intersection of Cloverfield and Colorado, heading toward Olympic and the I-10 onramp. Reggie gunned the engine, smashing through the light that had just turned red, barely dodging an oncoming Corvair, and racing up Cloverfield in hopes of catching the Electra.

“Unsafe at any speed!” He stated.

The Electra had reached the onramp, but as it was trying to turn, a large truck suddenly turned in from the other direction, moving very slowly onto the freeway, its size preventing any car from bypassing it on the narrow stretch. The Electra’s brakes screeched, and the driver quickly altered course, continuing on Cloverfield, making for Pico just another couple blocks down.

“Thank you!” Theresa gasped in relief at the truck as Reggie sped on by, passing the onramp as well. “I’ll never curse at a slow-moving truck driver again!”

The Electra hit Pico and swerved left, Reggie and Theresa gaining ground in Alan’s Malibu. The traffic on Pico was light.

“Floor it!” Theresa said, loading a cartridge into her pistol. “We need an ID!”

Reggie nodded and accelerated, closing the gap even more. The Electra flew through the light at Centinela, cruising beneath the overpass. Theresa caught sight of the license plate. Reggie swerved into the other lane, about to overtake it, when a Volkswagen Beetle cut in from the right. Reggie slammed on the brakes and cranked the wheel, scraping the Beetle’s fender, but kept going.

“HEB 121!” Theresa shouted out. “Remember that number!”

“Got it!” Reggie shouted back, switching lanes again, trying to keep up with the Electra. It was then that Theresa realized that the car radio had been playing the whole time, ever since Reggie started up the Malibu by the restaurant.

KZLA… of course. Country music. I Got Stripes by Johnny Cash was currently on. Theresa scoffed, switching it off. Alan… jeez , she thought.

“Any hope of getting our boy into Motown?” Reggie jested, trying to keep a sense of humor in the midst of an intense pursuit.

“Let’s catch these bastards first,” Theresa replied. Reggie nodded, watching as the Electra tried to hang a right on Overland but swerved when the driver saw, as Reggie and Theresa did, that the street was congested. They kept speeding down Pico, straight into Century City.

The sounds of sirens were soon heard behind them. Theresa looked back, catching sight of police car lights.
