THIRTEEN

“That’s all of it,” I said, handing Rebecca three stacks of neatly clipped cash. She flashed me a smile, her white teeth shining bright, and scooped it up.

“We did better than last week,” Rebecca noted, eyeing the money. Yeah, because I slipped the fifteen hundred dollars I stole into the pile. The wad’s disappearance left a cold spot in my back pocket. “My grandfather will be pleased.”

I bit my lip. I turned one wrong into a right today, but I wasn’t planning to take Dom’s resume from the scholarship finalist pile. Even if he hated me forever, the impact this kind of money could have on his life would be worth him cutting me out forever.

“However,” Rebecca continued, her eyes flitting up from the money to me in a split second. “What he is not pleased with is your moving the event I’d so carefully planned.”

A pit formed in my stomach.

“About that,” I began, the regret I was feeling sinking into my voice. She held up her hand.

“No, I don’t want to hear it, Harper. Look, you’re a good kid. You’re smart, and you’re clearly motivated to do big things, which is exactly what I was like at your age.” I blinked. This was taking a turn. “Most Order members waste their high school years partying. They don’t see it as the opportunity it is. What’s more, being my assistant is a privilege. You’re getting an inside peek into the inner workings of our society. It’s not something to be taken lightly. Next time, if I tell you to run an event, just follow the directions. My grandfather was seething about the change. That did not look good for me, Harper.” Rebecca’s usual ponytail was replaced with a plaid headband, pushing back shoulder-length brown hair.

I chewed on my lip. “I know. I’m sorry. I was just trying to make it…” I thought for a second. “Special.”

Rebecca put her hand on my shoulder. “I know. Again, I appreciate the initiative. We can do great things together. But you have to let me and my grandfather take the lead. People who go against the Order, well, it never turns out well for them. I don’t want that for you. That’s why I’m sticking my neck out for you.”

I forced a smile. “Thanks."

“I admit he made it a bigger deal than it had to be. Learn from this, but don’t let it bother you.” She winked, and I let myself relax a little.

The familiar clicking of Rebecca’s sharply pointed heels sounded as she rounded the desk in Allastair’s office, cash in hand, and stopped in front of the safe, hidden in plain sight behind the painting. I angled away from her without being asked, not wanting to look any more resistant than I already had, then pulled out my phone again to get a better look at what was inside. This time, when I’d handed her the cash, I stood and met her halfway, poised for a better look inside dear grandpa’s precious hiding spot.
