where ß determines the decay rate of average stress behind the crack tip, similar to (5.87), and J( ) is the creep function corresponding to E(t). The significant values of stress applied to the crack surface are due to the curvature of the surface tension layer near the crack tip. Accordingly ß is taken as

with p being the radius of curvature at the crack tip. As a practical matter, ß, or correspondingly, p, would be treated as a parameter to be determined from crack kinetics data, taken as independent of crack velocity in the first approximation.

The crack growth theory approaches of this section and the preceding section compare well with some experimental results [5.18, 5.19]. The general field of crack kinetics is evolving. A lively and energetic discussion of crack growth theory has occurred between McCartney [5.20, 5.21] and Christensen [5.22, 5.23]. The field shows promise in application to the life prediction of load bearing polymeric structures. Certainly the results found here are persuasive arguments that practical viscoelastic problems can be solved even when the straightforward application of integral transforms is not permitted.
