THE CRISP WINTER AIR WHIPPED through Destrou’s open window, waking him up instantly. In his bed, he rubbed his eyes gently as he tried to clear his thoughts. He only had an hour or two of sleep. His long night with Elu had left him feeling weary but he had to get up before the Village started the day without him. The image of Elu’s widened eyes remained locked in his mind. Eve is alive?

The day after the challenge was called Liquid Ice Day. And after what happened last night, he could never look at it the same now.

The boys lined up in front of the NoGo to take showers. Just like the other jobs, the roles circulated between the boys until they found who was best for each task. Destrou had spent his whole life waiting to have a role, but today was his first attempt, as their melter.

The Leader barked orders at the boys. Destrou watched him carefully as the boys hooted and hollered by and climbed up the NoGo. Chunks of ice dangled from the ropes tied to their torsos, like a pendulum on a clock. They weren’t rough, but smooth like polished glass, and glowed in the light.

The creation of liquid ice was founded by a visionary from the Kingdom and then adapted in the Village. The tower was approximately one hundred feet tall with three large bowls stacked on top of one another. Each one required someone inside to complete a task: chopping, melting, and stirring. Widely accepted as the greatest invention of their time, it was never expected to be replicated by lowly Villagers. Yet here it was. And once the giant shower was created, the Guardian prized it as his favorite object despite the myth of him never bathing.

When Destrou thought back to his last shower, a vision appeared in his mind—so vivid it felt like he was there. He didn’t really know much about liquid ice, except that everyone loved it even though they were allowed only two baths a month. But since Ranmau was happy to take a bath, then Destrou was happy. He remembered the smile on Ranmau’s face when the liquid drenched him, but he had no way in knowing that was the last day he’d see Ranmau smile. Never again since then.

Destrou was jerked back into the moment by the throbbing of his heart. It raced. He was nervous, and it didn’t help that the Melter’s gloves wouldn’t fit. They were white and furry and used to melt the ice quicker. And they were oddly large. Maybe designed for a Guardian, but definitely not a boy.

His body tightened as fingers clamped around his shoulder.

“You’ll do fine,” Elu said, her voice muffled by the cloth wrapped around her face. Her eyes were the only features not covered.

“Thank you.” Destrou smiled, hiding his hands. “Sure you’re okay with talking to me?”

“Of course!” She laughed. “I’m not afraid of these little boys. Don’t disrespect me.”

The gloves kept slipping off Destrou’s hands.“Yeah, but what about the Lead—”

“Oh hush!” Elu grinned, drawing herself up proudly.
