CHAPTER EIGHT

“What are your impressions of Marcy?”

Across the massive dining room in the three-bedroom suite she shared with her bosses, Rylee looked at Everett and carefully considered her answer. In the almost three months since she’d joined the team, her life had changed dramatically.

Her money nightmares were behind her, and she was planning a trip to New York to see Juliana, who was loving the Big Apple. Rylee had hired Linda, the admin recommended by Francesca. Linda was a perfect, no-nonsense, and take-charge, completely unfazed by Everett and Drake’s bosshole ways. Nothing rattled her, which made her a godsend.

Recently when they realized they needed her to become a fulltime employee, Linda had agreed, freeing up Rylee to handle other things.

At some point every day, she donned a hardhat and headed to their new building, which was still a construction site. Drake and Everett had abdicated the project, leaving the details to her, including carpeting, furnishings, even paint and trim choices. Fortunately the project manager had recommended an excellent interior decorator, and Rylee was working closely with him. They spent hours shopping and going through samples, and since she was in charge, she gave herself first choice of office space.

When Rylee wasn’t occupied with that, she traveled with either Drake or Everett, and sometimes both. When that happened, they often regrouped at the end of the day in their suite rather than in a restaurant. They could be more casual, spread out their computers and papers, and not be concerned about being interrupted, overheard, or seen.

The presidential suite at the Sterling Prestige Austin was incredible. And no wonder. It was situated close to the state capitol, and it hosted a lot of luminaries and politicians who appreciated finer touches. The place was filled with luxurious cherrywood, high-end marble, unbelievably comfortable padded dining chairs, and a living room sofa she sank into and never wanted to leave.

Since it was the end of a whirlwind two-day bus tour with Marcy, who was exploring a run for congress, Rylee had kicked off her shoes, exchanged her skirt for leggings and her blouse for a for a soft tank top, and was sipping a superb red wine from a Waterford goblet. They were sharing a charcutier board, and they planned to order a late dinner when Drake returned from his meeting with Altair.

“You’re hesitating.” Over the rim of his glass, Everett studied her. “Why? Doubts about Marcy’s viability?”

Rylee appreciated that Everett always sought her opinions. Over the time they’d spent together, she’d learned a lot, yet the more she knew, the more she realized how complex politics really was. Being called the Oracle was not something to be taken lightly. More and more she realized how badly the press had treated him after Allison Danbury’s defeat. One headline had screamed, Kingmaker Dethroned.

An indiscretion—from the candidate, not him—had unfairly tarnished his reputation.

“Rylee?”

“It’s…” Since the evening where Drake had pointed out how horribly she’d mischaracterized him and realizing how the nonstop gossip machine churned—demanding new, even more salacious rumors and conjecture—she’d been much more hesitant to rush to judgment.
