Chapter Nineteen

~

A fter suffering too many wounds to ignore, Des decided to spend a day looking for books at Glynna’s shop. He’d looked before, but he hadn’t perused her downstairs inventory. He felt like he was stitched together, which, unfortunately, he was.

“Watch where that lantern goes. No open flames downstairs,” Glynna warned as Des descended into the basement.

He put the lantern on the single reading table and was glad there was one old leather easy chair next to it. He sat to calm down his wounds and closed his eyes, smelling books with leather binding, old paper, and other smells best ignored. He had expected to see more mildew in the room, but there wasn’t any. Des thought the magical spell that kept the place dry was terrific. His knowledge of magic and its potential was based on what he had experienced, and most of that had been while fighting.

If he was on better terms with Grantak Poket, perhaps he could have asked the man to give him a few lectures or let him sit in on some classes, but that wasn’t the case. Maybe Volst could teach him. The two least magical countries in the world were Presidon and Dorwick, leaving Des, a mixture of the two, without magical potential and training, since Brother Yvan had been explicitly instructed not to teach him about the subject by his father.

He sat in the dim room and wondered if he should be looking for magic books instead of military books. If he knew more about magic, perhaps he could craft a better defense. Des didn’t know if his immunity would last, so it would be better to be prepared for the possibility of losing his magic immunity at the wrong time.

The books seemed to be in order as Des rose and went looking at the titles. He found a section devoted to Dryden. Des had read many of the same books in Tarviston Castle, but there was one he had never seen before. He opened a book on Dryden clerical practices. He had never thought the Dryden monasteries were as simple as they appeared to be.

He grinned as he dreamed for a moment of learning forbidden practices, but as he sat down to read, it appeared that the first part of the book dealt with how clerics organized services. Des had been to enough of those in his life. He decided to read the book and then check it out with Brother Yvan to see if things matched up. He set the book aside to borrow.

At the bottom of the shelf was a thin, ancient-looking volume that he pulled out to examine. The title wasn’t on the cover at all, but on the inside title page read Dryden Magical Practices. Now his dreams had been fulfilled. Maybe. What was the magical capability that Brother Yvan only alluded to? He retreated to the old easy chair and adjusted the lantern’s reflector before he began to read.

He opened the book, and at the top of the first page, there was a character in the old language.
