It was silent. Talah could hear her own pounding heart in tune with their breaths as they inched their way into the maze. The others had burst ahead, their heavy sprint leaving smeared footfalls in the dirt. Mazin and Talah had taken the less bold approach. They inched forward, every sense straining against the darkness. Every few feet torches lit their path, but they helped little, only showing a few feet at best. Talah was trying her best not to let her imagination get the best of her. Yet she couldn’t help but see shadowed faces in every fern that brushed against her arms, or coiled snakes with every step she took. The hair raised on her arms, the back of her neck tingled, and a sense of dread clogged her throat. The twin streams of water were always beside them, which made her feel just a tad better but not by much.
This had been a horrible idea. Talah’s father always danced around the question, but Talah knew people had died here. They had died for this chance at one meager spot at a University that Talah still knew little about. The University was full of secrets and mystery, with only its reputation to go by. Was it worth it? Truly?
“Wait.” Mazin paused, gripping her arm. She heard it too, the last fading sounds of a scream bounced down the trail to their ears. Mazin’s eyes were filled with fear as they stared at each other.
“We have to go forward, Mazin. It’s the only way.” They moved forward together, hands linked.
A faint sound grew louder as they neared the end, turning from a small trickle to a roar so loud Talah wanted to cover her ears. She stopped, frozen at the edge of the clearing that suddenly opened up before them. They stood at the edge of a dark pool. The roaring sound that thundered over them turned out to be an enormous waterfall, soaring high above the hedge walls of the maze. Never-ending torrents of water pounded at the sharp rocks that lay half-hidden beneath the froth and foam. Talah thought she could smell the ocean, the air tinged with salt and sun, though that would have been impossible. The water was like liquid silver, flashing in the torchlight that surrounded the small alcove. It was beautiful if Talah had the time to stop and appreciate it. Which she didn’t.
“Talah, look.” There was something in Mazin’s voice that pulled her from her thoughts.
Her gaze followed his finger to the form of someone floating half-submerged in the silver pool. She couldn’t make out who exactly it was, only that the person had long, dark hair that now rippled across the surface like kelp lost at sea and that their clothing was the same silver-gray color as the water itself. The skin looked pale, deathly pale, and the Cancer girl—for now, she could see it was a female—didn’t seem to be breathing. Mazin fumbled for his pockets, bringing out the emergency flare they had all been given.
