6 The Cleaning Routine

Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion.

I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.

~ Kurt Vonnegut

Now that the clutter is cleared, we can get down to the business of cleaning. This can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, even stress relieving as mentioned in chapter three. Although most people clean a little at a time, I personally like to make an event out of it. We will discuss zone cleaning and tips for time constraints later in this chapter. For a major house cleaning - perhaps done once a month, once a year, or just before guests arrive, let’s assume that time is not an issue. Make this process a meditation. Get out of your monkey mind for a little while and into your body by focusing all of your attention on the task of cleaning. Stay present in the moment and use your breath. With the right tools and a clear routine, you will feel empowered by making your home fresh and clean.

Get Prepared

• Put on comfy, preferably stretchy clothes

• Put on some energizing, uplifting or relaxing music depending on your mood

• Light a candle or some incense

• Grab a beverage to keep you hydrated

• Get everyone out of the house if possible because it’s easier to do a deep clean without people in the way

• Open windows if possible

• Practice a few basic yoga postures to lubricate joints and prevent injury
