ESCAPING THE TYRANNY OF THE URGENT
We must really amuse God. We run around trying to do so much, constantly searching for a rhythm in a world of being overwhelmed. The reality is that if we were to slow down and ask Him what is actually important, we might be surprised by what He could accomplish through us. Ephesians tells us that God “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (3:20).
The tyranny of the urgent tells us that what’s important is what’s now. We live our lives as slaves to the incessant needs of this tyrant, always feeling as if we’re running behind and never able to catch up. There are too many e-mails left unanswered, there are ten voicemails you haven’t responded to, there’s way too much laundry you’ve left on the floor, not to mention the dinner you still haven’t made for your family.
When our lives are dominated by the tyranny of the urgent, there’s little room left for God or others, much less any time for ourselves. We can’t serve two masters. We need to unlearn the habits that keep us perpetually busy and learn how to leave what’s undone for tomorrow. It can wait. We can take a breath, slow down, and take a moment to consider if all our movement is actually helping us accomplish the important things in life.
That text can go unanswered if it takes us away from time with God. That e-mail response can wait if it means you get enough sleep tonight. That task can wait if it means you get to spend quality time with your family.
The urgent is a tyrant king. But fortunately, the King we serve has set us free to live a life that brings us joy.
