In the last example, we consider the marriage shared by Thornton and Jolie. However, if we were to refer to the several marriages between Jolie and Pitt, we would write Billy Bob Thornton’s and Angelina Jolie’s marriages.

Another underappreciated use of the apostrophe to indicate possessive forms involves proper nouns that end in –s and appear plural but, in fact, represent single entities. For example, the United States is plural in presentation but singular in meaning.

Right: The students learned about the United States’ stance on landmines.

Right: Falgun read about Bloomfield Hills’ cultural history.
