Chapter 23

Hope

I worked the next morning shift and trudged in like I had a hangover. When I walked in, Bridget’s eyes glittered with pride. I handed her a coffee from my stash. An enormous bouquet of yellow sunflowers sat to the side of her, beaming with happiness. I loved sunflowers. Their yellow happy petals… it was nice to see them.

“Those are pretty.” I nodded to the bright flowers.

“They’re for you. There’s a card.”

I gaped at flowers, ten sunflowers mixed with bright yellow Gerber daisies stared back, mocking my stormy mood.

Like a child who couldn’t wait for Christmas, I snagged the card from the middle of the pedals.

I’m sorry.

I closed my eyes. No amount of sorry was going to make up for this. He left. There was no way he could make me feel better. I looked at the flowers, so bright, so happy… the opposite of what I felt right now.

Bridget smiled, waiting for me to coo, or squeal, or do something she might do. I didn’t.

“You want to keep them here? They brighten the room.” I picked up my tray of coffee. One for Jackson and one for myself and one for the nurse on duty tonight at the desk.

“Darling, whatever he did, he knows you well enough to send your favorite flower. That says something, doesn’t it?”

“Does it?”

“Life is simple Hope. You do the job, you love, find the partner you love, and live the life you love. There are no settlings or substitutions. You passed on the Dementor last night. You had your reasons. I wonder if Sunflower here is your reason?”

“He was part of it, but not anymore.” I gave her a tight-lipped smile, holding back the real raw feelings I had right now. “I’ll see you around, Bridget.”

“Not if I don’t see you first.”

I found Jackson at the nurses’s station flirting with the new maternity desk nurse. He was laying it on thick. I handed the new girl a coffee and Jackson grinned widely when he took his.

“Evening my siege.” Jackson mimicked some unknown movie I wasn’t sure about. I handed him his coffee, and he grinned.

“Oh, come to me, baby. I’ve missed you so much.” He ripped off the lid and gulped it like water. When he was done, he gave me the look. The one where he stared at me, expecting me to talk, and when I didn’t, he grabbed my elbow and dragged me to the lounge. He cut me a piece of cake and pointed to the couch, placing the cake on the coffee table in front of where I was supposed to sit.

“Dr. Kyle Johnson prestigious young San Francisco, promising doctor, proposed marriage to my BDF, bestest doctor friend, with a sixty-two thousand dollar ring and she said no.” He finished the last of his coffee and tossed the cup in the trash. “It’s weird that I did not receive a text or call from either you or Lucas about this topic. Well, you because Lucas wouldn’t call me about such things.
