The Rocky Mountain News railed against news of a congressional committee investigating Chivington and Sand Creek. It editorialized sarcastically, “By all means, let there be an investigation, but we advise the honorable congressional committee, who may be appointed to conduct it, to get their scalps insured before they pass Plum Creek on their way out.” Plum Creek, Nebraska was where 40 white men in a freight wagon train had been attacked and killed on August 8, 1864, by a joint party of Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors.
