After dropping Jerry off at his office, I’d gone back to my own and found Velvet waiting for me. She’d compiled a file on Liam Stone. The skunk was the obvious successor to Ziggy Freeman.

When I finished reading, I called Duke and asked him for all he had on Arnold Cummings and had Velvet run over and pick it up.

While she was gone, I stared out the window at the city lost in thought. James Dickson was a badger with a misguided grudge after my hide. That was nothing new.

Three-million-dollars was another story. That kind of money could bring a lot of trouble to the city and set a determined male back in power.

Could Arnold Cummings have sat on the money all these years and now was back? I’d heard stories of males sitting on their stash content with just having the loot and not spending it, but those males were few and far between.

Was Arnold Cummings Mr. Big? Anything was possible, but why try to kill off Lacie Davis? Was Cumming so jealously in love with Mary he’d be willing to get rid of another male’s offspring? The thought would be more believable if only Bennet was involved. The badgers showing up as well had me thinking more than one party wanted her dead. But if there was only one party and an open contract, assassins would be jockeying for the kill.

Bennet could have thought I was just another male out for the money the job offered.

While I was thinking, Velvet came back with the file and set it on my desk. Everything was there. Photos, arrest history, you name it. The snake, if he was still alive, would be eighty-two.

Duke included the transcript from Nick Sherman’s trial and left a note suggesting I read it. The trial had been a lengthy one and the transcript thick.

I glanced up to see Velvet watching me and held up the transcript. “Would you?”

The lynx stuck her tongue out at me and took the file. “What am I looking for?”

“Background on Cummings.”

“Why not just ask Nick Sherman?”

“I will, but I want more than just his perspective.” I told Velvet what I’d come up with so far and watched as she took it all in.

“Yes and no,” she said.

“Something’s still missing. Why don’t you go visit Paula Wayde? She might be a little more open with you. The doe tends to drift off, but I think she likes the company.”

“Okay.”

“And be careful,” I added. “James Dickson and Damian White are still on the loose.”

“I will. Duke said he’d call if he heard anything about them. He also mentioned Edmund Flagg is squawking about your involvement with the agency we now work for. Inspector Tremaine is also out of sorts. You have a tail waiting for you downstairs.”

“Figured as much. Luckily I know a few different ways out of the office.”

Velvet handed me a set of keys. “To your new apartment, with a nice big double bed, and a comfy couch if you’d prefer.”

“What happened to waiting until we’re married?”

“Call me impatient.
