CHILDLESS CEO TO PARENTS WITH KIDS ON VIDEO CALLS: ‘THANK YOU, IT’S LIKE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR’

More company leaders should think this way.

by Quinn Fish

With kids and parents stuck at home due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, video call interruptions are the new norm for working moms. Luckily, some managers get it.

Now that parents have been homeschooling while working from home for a few months, we’ve grown accustomed to distractions. Still, the interruptions can lead to feelings of guilt and unnecessary stress for parents while on the clock.

Robert Sadow, the CEO and co-founder of Scoop, a rideshare enterprise company in the San Francisco Bay area, took to LinkedIn with his thoughts on the little faces and voices he sees on video call meetings.

“A lot of us are on video conferences most of the day. It is taxing, exhausting and frankly a bit monotonous.

“When you start a meeting and someone has their child with them, it’s like a breath of fresh air. We can’t help but smile as they interact with their parents, ask questions, or point at the screen.

“It’s also a really important reminder of the big picture and the many facets of the lives of our team members,” Robert wrote.

Though Robert doesn’t have any kids, his refreshing take on accepting the reality of working parenthood in the COVID-19 era should set an example for managers everywhere. Further, he emphasized that the workplace needs to acknowledge what team members might be dealing with at home.

“To all the #parents: I don’t have children, so I can’t pretend to understand just how hard it is to balance #work and everything happening at home,” Robert wrote. “But I can say #thankyou for the little bits of joy you bring to some of my meetings.”

Let this be a reminder that the next time your little ones pop into your video meeting, instead of scrambling to shoo them away, consider the fact that they just might be brightening someone’s day. Stay strong, mama.
