What infrastructure do I need to make my chickens happy?
Chickens are the easiest livestock you'll ever own. Their requirements include:
Shade in the summer
Shelter from rain
Light (the sun is perfect)
A fully or semi-enclosed shelter in winter (depending on your climate)
Clean water
Food
One nest box for every 3 to 5 hens
A roost
The perfect nest box is 15" X 15" X 12". A plastic egg crate turned on its side makes a simple nest box, but you'll need to add a lip across the bottom so that the straw doesn't get kicked out. It's also best to wrap the crate so that the nest box is dark.
