TWENTY-SIX
Once the tension between Sarah and Karen had dissipated, Jackson took stock of the situation. It was still early afternoon, the sun high in the sky despite their walk across the island and the altercation at their assumed camp.
âIâm going to start mapping the island,â he said.
âWe really should stick together,â Emily cautioned. âMark should never have left alone. The last thing we need is to lose you, too.â
âWe havenât lost Mark,â Karen said. Her face belied her true feelings.
âNo, I didnât mean that,â Emily said. âTemporarily. Heâs just gone temporarily.â After Karenâs fight with Sarah, the last thing she wanted was to get on the wrong side of the software engineer.
âSomeone needs to fetch water. I know where thereâs a stream. I can map out the island on the way; Iâll go farther if I can.â
âYouâll have to take our water bottles,â Chen said with a worried expression. âWhat will we do while youâre away?â
âIâ¦we couldâ¦â Jackson struggled to think of a solution.
Emily fished in her pocket and brought out the strip of condoms that she had scavenged from Markâs bag.
âEmily! I hardly think itâs the time forâ¦â
Emily laughed at the Chinese manâs embarrassment.
âFor water,â she said. âYou can fill one and bring it back. It can hold a lot more than you would think.â
âI wouldnât imagine Mark would need extra-large,â Jackson muttered.
âThey expand, donât they?â Emily smiled. âTake one, maybe two. We might need the other for later.â
Jackson raised his eyebrow, wondering what Emily had in mind for the final preservative, and guessing that it wasnât anything to do with intercourse.
âThanks,â he said. âGood idea, Emily. I will take half the water bottles too, okay? Put together what we have left. Who has some?â
The team looked at each other.
âOnly a tiny bit,â Liam said.
âNot much at all,â Chen said, holding out his almost empty bottle.
âTry to conserve what you have. Iâll bring more.â
âIâve got half a bottle,â Emily offered.
âSame,â Karen said. âI didnât know when there might be more.â
The pilot nodded. âBrilliant. Pour the dregs together, and Jackson, you take the empties.â
âI still donât think you should go alone,â Emily said. âWhat if that boar is still out there?â
âIf thereâs one boar, there are definitely more than one. At least we know about them now.â Jackson was pragmatic about the danger.
âAnd what about the things we donât know about?â Sarah spoke for the first time since the ruckus with Karen.
âIâll be careful,â Jackson said. âIâll be faster alone. Iâm fitter than you think, you know.â
No one had said otherwise.
âOkay,â the pilot said, taking it upon himself to green-light the expedition. âDo you know how to tell which way is north? For the map?â
Jackson shook his head.
âUse your watch,â Emily chimed in.
âSomeone knows her stuff,â Bellamy smiled.
âItâs most accurate when the sun is at its highest point,â Emily said. âBut we know that was over there.â She pointed between the trees to where they had seen the sun earlier that day. âThen find a reference point. The cave will be perfect.
