If Your Daughter Were a Parenting Expert .

I asked my daughters and their friends to pretend to be parenting experts and tell us what they wanted most from moms. I asked them this question about fathers as well, and have absorbed their answers into the next chapter. On mothering, they gave many answers, most of which you’ve already thought of. Yet again, they are both kind and courageous answers that bear repeating: Listen to me. I don’t always say it just right, but I mean something important.

Talk to me. I want to know what you think, even sometimes when I say I don’t.

Be consistent with rules and consequences. I don’t really mind, even if I complain.

Laugh with me. There’s nothing like a sense of humor. And cry with me too.

Be a parent first and a friend second. I have lots of friends, but not a lot of parents.
