“So that’s your object,” Merlin said darkly. “But it cannot be you, Oberon. I’ve seen the way you rule in your guise as Lord Destrian. You murder, pillage, and act with no regard for human life.” The Fae faces around us grew angry. My heart beat faster. “You must allow the sword to find a worthy king. Only then can peace return.”

Oberon huffed through his nose and flicked a flower bulb with his finger. “All men are cruel; all men are fools,” he said, cracking a smile of long, sharp teeth. “How could it matter which one of them rules?”

“Don’t eat me!” a familiar voice shouted in the night.

There was commotion in the trees, and I leapt up, barking. The vines kept me at the post. I growled and struggled with them.

Branches rustled at the edge of the camp. I sniffed the air, but we were upwind. Some Fae stood; others held their breath.

A boy came through the leaves with two large Fae holding him by the arms.
