Chapter 19
The odd animal apparitions did return, as promised, with bedding and food. At first Miriam tried to resist the food, but her grumbling stomach insisted. Skylar dug in right away. She could hear the slurping and chewing in the dark. Eating seemed much more disgusting when reduced only to sound. She only nibbled at first, but eventually gave in and took larger bites. Sheâd need her strength for the eventual escape, and the peanut butter sandwich provided pretty good calories.
She ate only half of the sandwich before stopping, ignoring the side of what she guessed to be potato chips. Deep in thought, she stretched out on the sleeping bag theyâd provided, her head propped up on a soft feather pillow. Not exactly a fancy hotel room, but she could see herself getting some sleep this way. She tried to work out the situation. Whatever this âritualâ was, she didnât figure it would mean their death. No reason to provide sustenance to people you just meant to kill.
After Skylar finished munching on his own feast, she heard him also settle down, rustling around a bit before finally leaving them both in silence again.
Miriam had decided that there were no more skinwalkers hiding in the dark. Too much time had passed. No living creature could remain quiet that long. She was fairly certain they were alone, and that meant they could talk freely to devise a plan. It still presented a risk, of course. Perhaps they had night vision cameras, or audio recording devices.
While she schemed, Skylar fell into a soft snore. How the hell could he sleep at a time like this? She supposed she never would understand him.
She rotated her wrist and felt for the button on the side that made her watch glow a bright green. Theyâd been here a while. Long enough that Gabe should have gotten back. Maybe he stood above her, unable to find a way down. Sheâd been unconscious on the trek downward, so she couldnât even picture him finding the entrance. She found it difficult to remain hopeful when she had to put so much of her faith and trust into someone she barely knew. Someone without any of the skills necessary, really. Still, she yearned for him to find her, some part of her desperate for his easy companionship.
Did she have a crush?
She didnât really know how to process that. For as long as she could remember, boys generally annoyed her, especially when thought of in a romantic or sexual way. Itâs not that she didnât sometimes find them physically attractive; itâs just that their mouths tended to destroy that attraction with the first word. Her life worked better when she only had to rely on herself, but getting close to Macy had started to soften up that conviction... a little. Though still novel, having someone to rely on that wasnât obligated through family carried with it certain intangible benefits in which Miriam still had a hard time putting stock.
She pushed Gabe out of her mind.
