What It Means to Own It
We will never forget one business trip we took to Hawaii. During a break in a training session, we decided to take a quick tour of the island, and at one point we saw a number of people happily driving cars over the rough lava beds. We joked that whoever was beating up those cars could hardly be the owners—those cars had to be rentals.
That gave us an idea. Back at our training session, we brought up those lava-bed drivers as a way of introducing ownership, or in this case the lack of ownership. The examples caused a lot of embarrassed laughter when we discovered that those abused cars were indeed rentals—and the drivers were sitting right there in our own classroom!
Why do we care more for the things we “own” than for the things we “rent”? Perhaps it’s because we don’t have as much invested when we simply rent or borrow; there’s not as much at stake. When you own something—whether it’s a car, a work assignment, or a relationship—you make an investment, usually involving some degree of sacrifice. When you rent, you can walk away without losing anything. At the core of it, owners are just more invested than renters; they are “all in.”
