Chapter 21

Julian

JULIAN WOKE BEFORE Olivia, watching the shadows of sunset lengthen on his bedroom wall. The heavy shutters outside would be lifting soon, and he hoped the sudden rattle wouldn’t startle her. Her head rested opposite of his, her curls piled over her face like a screen. Sometime before they’d passed out together, she’d claimed one of his shirts, which tented around her curves like pajamas.

For an evening, he’d forgotten his troubles in her arms. They niggled at the edges of his consciousness now, threatening to remind him why he was supposed to spend a couple days in the mansion while others worked. His friend Luke, Alex’s brother-in-law from his first mate, had taken over his duties with Sirius, and last he’d heard, the two of them got along quite well. Since Luke was a shapeshifter of Sirius’s bloodline, it wasn’t too much of a surprise.

It left Julian at loose ends to recover. As he played with a lock of Olivia’s hair, he thought this was the most pleasant recuperation period he’d taken in a long time. If he didn’t have the uncertainty of the Winter Key magic inside of him, he’d extend this time-out as long as possible.

Olivia stirred, arching her back as she muffled a yawn. Multiple pops came from her joints. She released a pleased hum as she opened eyes of liquid gold and smiled at him.

“Goooooood evening,” she said with her usual pep.

“Ciao, bella.” He’d seen her face light up at his toast last night as it did now from the simple phrase he spoke in his mother tongue.

“Oh, baby. Speak Italian to me.”

He obliged and got a few sentences in about her beauty before she laughed and pushed playfully at his chest. “Sorry. I didn’t mean it. I don’t understand what you’re saying!”

He clasped her hand, whispering, “I said…you’ve given light to the eternal night of my life. I don’t know what I’d do without you, and I’m completely unsurprised you wake up with energy.” Her eyes seemed to sparkle as she listened and fluttered a hand to her chest.

“Does it make me a morning person if it’s technically evening?” she asked.

“I’d say that counts,” he said.

She released a short giggle, resting her head on his shoulder. “So, what do you want to do?”

“Is this another trick question, bella?” His hand smoothed down his shirt on her, tracing curves he vowed to learn every nuance of.

“Maybe we should get up,” Olivia said some time later, laying out in a satisfied sprawl beside him.

He shrugged, not wanting her to stop her idle stroking of his chest and sides. “It’s not like anyone is expecting us.”

It was, apparently, the wrong thing to say. Her brows drew together as her eyes dimmed from their supernatural brightness. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. Gwendolyn gave me time off too.” From how she spoke, it didn’t seem like she thought it was the kind of break she’d earned.

“What’s causing you trouble?” he asked, recalling she wasn’t so excited about her Alchemyst abilities as when she’d first started despite creating the potion that’d saved his life.
