When speaking to corporate audiences I emphasize the importance of imagery in leading others. There are several reasons for this. One, it’s the single most important communication skill leaders possess. Two, because it’s not something most leaders have consciously worked on and developed, there is much to gain—a huge upside for the leader. Three, it’s at the foundation of every behavior. When she was conducting workshops for figure skaters and their coaches several years ago, my wife Sandra took some of the ideas on the power of imagery in Margo Adair’s amazing book Working Inside Out and blended Margo’s thoughts with her own.

“Images are the language of movement. Moving in space is a right-brain activity. Images are the language of the right brain. The part of you that talks about it is not the part that can do it. Words are useful if they are translated into symbols, feelings, and metaphors. Images are what instruct the body. Talk to yourself in words if you want to, but be sure that words are translated into images or feelings.”
