“The Unveiling of Andanova leaves me weary. I traveled to the borders, past the mountains, and waited with the others. We fought with all our might, defeating the demons that escaped. But I cannot shake this feeling that this is just the beginning.”

—Exorcist Damian Silver

1025 A.E.C.

With a serpent-like torso of intertwining centipede legs, the demon coiled itself around Seren, ensnaring him within its grotesque embrace. It was undeniably a female creature, with five feminine masked faces, each exhibiting a different emotion. She replicated agony, fear, despair, disgust, and anger among them.

Mila recognized the demon. The sketches she had come across in the archives of the Sanguine Royal Library suddenly flooded her mind. How had she been so stupid and not realized? She should’ve recognized the Pale Lopers. It was now clear to Mila that the Shademother was responsible for everything.

The Shademother, an immensely formidable and tumultuous demon, had roamed the Veil for centuries, harboring an insatiable longing to breach into the realm of humanity. It was widely known that the more powerful the demon, the greater number of human souls they required to sustain their manifestation in the mortal realm. And it seemed she still hadn’t had her fill.

“Sweet dreams, little prince,” hissed the demon.

The Shademother cradled Seren like a child, holding him close to her chest. A spell kept him in an induced illusion, leaving him in a fitful sleep. The demon took one of her many arms and touched his hair gently. Mila’s heart thumped as the raven color appeared to melt away, changing to a brilliant silvery-white. The creature reached over with another arm to remove the bracelet from Seren’s wrist. All her masks turned into grotesque gestures of laughter as she held the bracelet between two spindly fingers.

“The Sun God?” the demon jeered. “Oh, you foolish humans are always blind to the truths of this world. Soon, he will be reduced to a mere mortal. These trinkets are useless.”

The bracelet disintegrated in her blackened palm.

“Let him go,” Mila said boldly. “You’d be a fool to kill him.”

The she-demon chittered, its repulsive form scuttling at Mila with alarming speed. A disturbing smile contorted her wretched masks as if filled with sadistic delight. “And why, little witch? Do you think he is worth more to me alive? I wonder if he will taste as exquisite as your dear friend.”

Mila’s hands began to shake. “You’re lying,” she seethed.

“Am I? Or should I show you?”

Images invaded Mila’s mind. Jude’s lifeless eyes stared into the sky as blood pooled around him. Lopers stalked around his fresh corpse and prepared to devour him.

“Stop!”

This demon was an expert manipulator of perception, capable of delving into one’s memories. This Mila remembered clearly. She couldn’t trust anything the Shademother showed her. The corrupted wisps had caught her off-guard in the sewers, and she’d acted helpless as they bombarded her with the same nightmare that haunted her. This time, she knew what she was up against.

Mila held her dagger out, the light gleaming proudly under the light of the moon.
