The White House was infuriated at the attack on the base and the deaths of the two advisors. The shit rolled downhill from there. It seemed the Americans at the Saigon embassy had been caught with their pants down from a complete intelligence failure. The South Vietnamese Army was responsible for the American advisors' safety. If 10,000 of Diem's best troops couldn't keep out a small band of sappers and assassins, what hope was there that they could stop the North from invading. There was more talk of cutting off aid, packing up everything, and leaving the country.

Diem and his family shed the blame for the attack like a duck sheds water. The commander of the base received the bulk of the accusations and was stripped of his command. The officers and soldiers assigned to guard the Americans were quickly dealt with by Brother Nhu and his security forces. Some were accused of being traitors and quietly executed with photographic evidence being sent to the Americans, who found it distasteful.

Lansdale and the CIA head of station at the embassy both caught flak. They had been given a large amount of resources and yet were unable to unearth the attack before it happened. Lansdale, in particular, was criticized for not keeping Diem focused on the Americans' security needs. It was unfair, but that didn't matter. The colonel was taken down a few notches in the eyes of his superiors because of the incident. Lansdale knew he would need to do something notable in retaliation to regain their confidence.

Deep down, Eisenhower knew it was only a matter of time until the American advisors in Vietnam were attacked. They were a juicy propaganda target, and as much as he hated to admit it, they were spread out across the country, and nobody could protect them if the enemy were determined. It was the reality of the simmering covert war that the Americans were now fighting against the communists. With the embassy marine guards as the only American troops on the ground in Vietnam, there wasn't much hope in preventing further attacks. But he also knew that if America suspended military support, it was only a matter of time until South Vietnam fell, and the communists obtained the foothold in Southeast Asia they longed for. Even if things were slowly getting worse, at least the situation in the South was somewhat stable, and the bulk of the communist forces was being held at bay. It was a small consolation, but at this point, he would take whatever he could get. Besides, he was nearing the end of his second term as president, and soon Vietnam would be the next guy's problem. For now, he just needed to keep the whole thing from falling apart.
