CHAPTER TWELVE

Nor dread nor hope attend

A dying animal;

A man awaits his end

Dreading and hoping all;

Many times he died,

Many times rose again …

— Death by William Butler Yeats

We made our way from the dolmen to the private jet that was waiting to take us back to England. It was quite a hike, and I had plenty to think about to fill the time. The climb down was made all the more difficult by the descending darkness. In no time, the sun had slipped past the horizon, and we were guided only by the light of the half-moon and the orb of blue magic hovering over Shug’s palm.

“Do you want me to contact the Sluagh and have them come back to Rooksmont? And shouldn’t Douglas be getting a hold of Baptiste?” Teg asked, fishing out his phone as we made our way down a steep, rocky slope.

I shook my head. “Thank you, but they need to hear the update from me.” I smiled tiredly at Teg. “I want you to spend as much time as you can with your family when we get back. I think you should call Hedia now. It’s time for her to come back from her parents’ house.”

I wagered that the Horned God wouldn’t be looking to waste time by going after anyone but me at this point. And my loved ones, I thought. Better call my mother.

I knew my mother would be sleeping at this time of night, but I called her anyway. “Hello, Angie,” she responded groggily after she picked up the phone.

“I need you to come to Rooksmont straight away, Mum,” I told her in as cheerful a voice as I could muster.

My mother was not one to ever be fooled. She sensed the weight of my request and knowing very well the duties of the goddess of war, she sighed. “I’ll leave first thing in the morning. I do worry about you, dear. Please be there when I arrive.”

“That’s the plan.” I hung up and made the next two calls, the first to Zwena Baptiste and the second to Natalie Kimber. I had to leave messages for both since it was so late at night. Briefly, I explained the situation without mentioning anything that had happened at Goibhniu’s workshop. “Be ready to move ahead as planned,” I finished both messages. “Events have picked up their pace.”

A few weeks ago, the three of us had decided what to
