I drove us to the DA’s office at a normal speed, unwilling to risk us being pulled over while we were dressed as we were, with bags full of gear stowed around our feet. It wouldn’t be wise to pick up any undue attention before getting to our destination.

I parked several blocks away when we arrived, not wanting our car to be noticed on the scene if anything went wrong, and after I switched off the vehicle, we gathered our things and stepped out onto the pavement. The city was never really dark, even if the sky above was pitch black since there were so many lamps lining the streets and lights poured out of the various bars and businesses still open for business this late. It was nearing one a.m., so most of the people out and about were some kind of intoxicated, which meant no one paid much attention to us as we struck off down the sidewalk, our pace swift and determined. I tightened the straps of my bag until it lay flat on my back and didn’t bounce or wiggle as I moved, and the others followed suit around me.

It took maybe fifteen minutes to reach the sidewalk across from Harper’s building, and we paused near the bus stop to take a quick look around. There were a couple of bright lights on the lower level, but the upper floors were completely dark. Two cars sat in the parking lot, presumably belonging to the security guards, but I wasn’t going to assume the building was completely empty of other people.

I motioned for the others to follow me, and when the street was clear, I crossed and moved swiftly toward the side of the building with the parking lot, pulling my hat lower so the brim would shield my face from any cameras watching the outside of the building. When we found the side entrance, Doc, Rosa, and I flattened ourselves against the wall on either side, and I nodded at Xavier. He took his fake card from his pocket and flipped it around in his fingers several times before swiping it through the reader beside the door. I held my breath as I waited to see if it would work. The sensor seemed to think about it for longer than usual, but then the light turned green, and I heard the lock disengage. No alarms sounded, but that didn’t mean the guards hadn’t been alerted to the door opening, so Xavier yanked it open, and we passed inside quickly, jogging down the hall with our senses on high alert.

I paused at the corner and glanced in both directions before turning to the right. Xavier had found us some blueprints for the building, and we’d marked out three routes up to Harper’s office—our preferred path and two alternates in case we ran into trouble. Our shoes were soft-soled and hardly made any sound on the tiled floor as we carried on down the corridor, and I kept my ears pricked for any sign of an approaching security guard.
