Chapter sixteen

After viewing the latest DVD, but before deciding to unplug her feelings, Amelia had been so upset that she’d packed as much ammo as possible because she planned to head off into the jungle, and she’d need that much artillery to protect herself. Now with a clearer mind, she realized that Riley and Trevor had done the same thing, which ended with three dead students. She wasn’t stupid enough to begin blasting at the invisible beasts.

Amelia had questioned whether they had the other students because they had been armed and had aimed their weapons into the woods. In that instance, why wouldn’t the invisible monsters respond? They were under threat of attack. Who could blame them for protecting themselves or their loved ones?

She wouldn’t make that same mistake. She kept her gun near her thigh, aimed at the ground, as she continued to analyze the area spread out before her. But she’d neither seen, sensed, nor heard anything moving toward her.

Amelia reached the outskirts of the forest and stared at the trees, watching as the branches swayed in the slight breeze, listening to the sound of the leaves tickling each other. She told herself that she wasn’t delusional for approaching the area she’d been warned not to enter. Yet even when she’d stood among the trees while Trevor’s team headed deeper into the forest, she’d been nervous, but she hadn’t sensed danger. Besides, two dozen robed figures had traveled through the forest without getting attacked. Not only that, one of the creatures had come up so close behind her that she felt its disgusting breath on her skin.

Yet the beast hadn’t attacked her. And if she didn’t threaten them now, maybe they would leave her alone. As someone who wanted to stay on campus to finish up her studies and earn her degree, Amelia had no interest in leaving the island.

She chastised herself for being so dim-witted as to believe that the cult had made some type of verbal agreement with the creatures. The monsters weren’t human. No human could lift a two-hundred-pound man over his head with ease and hurl him ten feet through the air. Not only that, but every person on the planet would bleed upon getting hit with bullets. Whatever stalked this forest hadn’t hemorrhaged. Could humans communicate with something like that?

For the first time, Amelia looked beyond the threat in the forest to ask herself an important question: why were those creatures here? Earlier, when the students had entered the woods firing their guns, she’d presumed that the monsters had protected their loved ones, and that still could’ve been a valid reason.

But Mr. Blackwell had informed everyone not to venture too far into the jungle, or they might not make it out alive. He often deployed half-truths, lies, and uncertainty to prompt her to either take action or to influence her thoughts or decisions. He was the type of person who not enjoyed playing chess, but who could spend twenty minutes on a single
